Lubna Salim plays Leela, the lively and daydreaming wife of Arvind. Liked by everyone, she is always jovial and ready for a good old gossip. She and her younger sister-in-law or devrani Pravina are always hatching schemes against Baa's wishes to try and modernise the house or get out of doing work. Fashion-conscious and educated, she wishes to move to America one day and see her daughter Dimple happily married to Anish. Often clashes with her sister-in-law Charubala, who lives in the town (as opposed to the Thakkar's in the suburbs) and tries to glorify this superior lifestyle in every way.

Speaking about the serial, Lubna says, "Baa Bahoo Aur Baby' is a story of everyone. It is about a joint family ruled by their mother who besides being sure of what is right and wrong, has a loving nature. Unlike other serials she shares an amazing relationship with her daughter-in-laws. This serial depicts the problems of a middle class family in a realistic way."

Baa Bahoo Aur Baby is made by Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia (of Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai and Instant Khichdi fame). It presents the hues of life packed with high emotions, temperaments, idiosyncrasies of real people and even more real situations.

Imagine having the freedom to choose your family! Umeed Bhavan is a family home for a group of women, who have come to terms with their unfortunate past and have started life afresh with a positive attitude that can never pull them down. ‘Ek Packet Umeed’ is a touching drama about the experiences and lives of these women as they unfold in Umeed Bhavan...

Lubna Salim plays Paroma...
Paroma lives at Umeed Bhavan but has a strong air of supremacy about her. She is extremely efficient at her work but is a woman of strong likes and dislikes. She is arrogant and snooty but at the same time has an inherent need to be accepted by all. She constantly looks down upon all men and is always getting into fights with her roommate Sundari whom she considers too juvenile .

Speaking about her new role, Lubna says, “I was scared for doing the role in Ek Packet Umeed initially. People also asked me why I am doing this show but I took the role up as a challenge as it has grey shades. The entire atmosphere on the sets is very positive. There is a huge tree on our location and we feel like we are at the National Park. We eat lunch together, gossip a lot. We have lots of make up rooms and all of them have different names, disco rooms and all. Sometimes I feel like we are having a kitty party.”

Lubna Salim, fondly known as Leela Bhabhi in Baa Bahu Aur Baby also plays the woman of today who is strong and independent, living her life as she wants in NDTV Imagine’s Ek Packet Umeed.

Talking about the stand-out character that she portrays as Paroma in Umeed Bhavan, Lubna says, “She is extremely learned and very confident. She is the right hand of Umeed Bhavan because she looks after the financial matters, also supervises and gets the job done by the ladies in Umeed Bhavan. Though the character is a bit snooty and headstrong, Paroma demands all the respect as she is very confident in her outlook”.

When asked about the vast difference seen in the characters of Leela Bhabhi and Paroma, the actress is quick to say, “Frankly speaking, I am very much different from both the characters I play. But, I also feel that every actor gives a personal touch to the role he/she is portraying. Keeping this aspect in mind, I can say that both Leela Bhabhi and Paroma are part of me”.

Lubna recollects that her association with JD and Aatish goes back to her college days in Mithibai College, where they were her seniors. Lubna owes her name and fame to the duo, states, “They brought me to the limelight and if I am recognized today, it is because of them”.

When asked about the advantages of working with one production house, an extremely witty Lubna has this to say, “It is good, because I have never felt the necessity of appointing a secretary as they manage my dates very well for both my serials”.

Last but not the least Lubna confirms that, “I put in equal time and effort to my theatre activities and modeling too”.

Born in a family that had a zest for the theatre, Lubna's introduction to the stage was a natural progression. Her parents’ attachment to the Indian Peoples Theatre Association (IPTA) led her to act since she was a child. In fact one of her earliest plays was with IPTA. She played the young daughter of Dhania and Hori in the play HORI that was directed by Kamlakar Sontake in 1979.

Lubna feels that having grown up with the likes of actors and theatre people like A.K. Hangal, Rohini Hattangady, Shabana Azmi, Arundhati Nag, Farooque Sheikh, Sulabha Arya, M.S. Sathyu and others, her sensibility and the skills she required for the the theatre got the best possible schooling. Later plays like LOK KATHA, BAKRI, AAKHRI SAWAL, ANDHE CHOOHE followed.

She hence grew up acting and never considered snapping her ties with the stage. She joined Mithibai College where alongside her studies she could pursue theatre at the inter-collegiate level. In her college days she won many awards, including the prestigious Balraj Sahani award for best actress.

She met Salim Arif, her husband while she was doing the tele-serial ‘Discovery of India’. She married early and soon thereafter took a long break to raise her two sons. Nevertheless she always had her husband’s support and it was he who encouraged her to return to acting after her sabbatical.

Thus along side plays, voice-overs and modelling assignments followed. Tele-serials such as ‘Daaman’ and her role as Jijamata in ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji’ were appreciated. She has done ad-campaigns for ICICI Bank and for consumer products like Ariel, Pepsodent, Dettol, etc. These days her role as Leela bhabhi in the soap ‘Baa, Bahu and Baby’ has made her quite popular. And she is also creating waves as Paroma in the newly launched show 'Ek Packet Umeed'.

In theatre, she has worked with many directors to date and has performed in plays such as Azhar ka Khwab, Atmakatha, Shyam Rang, Mera Kuch Saaman, Collaborators, Kharaashein and Kachche Lamhe.
Indeed her father, Javed Siddiqi’s reputation as one of India’s best-known scriptwriters and playwrights has not stopped Lubna from emerging as a capable actor in her own right.

She formed her own company, ‘Essay Communications’ along with her father and her husband and produced plays like Kharaashein, Ghalibnaama, Aapki Soniya, Peele Patton ka Ban, Kachche Lamhe and the recent Shyam Rang.
